Rooftop vs ground-mount for SMEs

Roof or ground? The choice is usually made by your site, not your preference. Understanding the pros and cons stops you fighting a lost cause.

Key points
  • Rooftop is usually cheaper and closer to on-site loads
  • Ground-mount unlocks larger systems where the roof isn't suitable
  • A structural survey is step one for every rooftop install
  • Both technologies generate the same per installed kWp

Rooftop

Cheapest install if the roof structure is sound and south-facing. No planning issues in most cases and the closest possible route to on-site consumption.

Ground-mount

Better when the roof is unsuitable and you have surplus land. Needs planning permission above ~1 MW and a longer cable run to the point of use.

Structural surveys

Any commercial rooftop install starts with a structural report. Older buildings often need reinforcement before panels can be added.

Generation profile

Both technologies generate identical energy per kWp installed. The difference is install cost, planning and how quickly the power can reach your loads.
